Key trends in the online casino market in Spain in 2025

Online gambling revenues in Spain reached a record level of 398.11 million euros in the first quarter of 2025. This result confirms experts’ predictions about the potential of the Spanish market and shows its continued growth.

According to a report published by the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) on June 27, this amount means a 13.68% increase year-on-year, despite a slight decrease of 2.68% compared to the last quarter of 2024.

The growth in GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue) is the result of higher activity from local players. Total deposits increased by 8.13% quarter-on-quarter and 23.85% year-on-year. Payouts to players also rose significantly, by 10.64% compared to the previous quarter and by 29.38% compared to the first quarter of 2024.

There is no doubt that the online casino segment dominates the Spanish market, generating 203.06 million euros in GGR, which is 51.01% of the total. Among this segment, slot machines are the leaders and the main driving force, recording an impressive year-on-year growth of 42.06%. Punto y banca showed a strong quarterly increase of 33.77%, while traditional and live roulette fell slightly, by 3.62% and 2.85% respectively.

What games do Spanish online players choose?

The king in the Spanish iGaming salons is slot games. They are the most popular genre among Spanish players. The most chosen titles by Spanish players include: Book of Dead (Play’n GO), Starburst (NetEnt), Spanish Gold, and other games with local themes.

In slot games, Spanish players mainly appreciate a high return to player (RTP), interesting gameplay, and frequent bonuses with free spins. Local patriotism and attachment to local themes are also important. Themed games connected to local holidays like Las Fallas or La Tomatina are especially well accepted.

The second place in the favorite games of Spanish players are table games such as European and French roulette, blackjack, and poker. A trend that is becoming more visible in this area is live dealer games. Live games (mainly roulette or blackjack) offer real-time interaction with professional dealers.

An important position among trending games in Spain is, of course, games with cultural themes. Slot and table games with Spanish motifs, folklore, and symbols (for example flamenco, corrida, El Escorial) are niche but have strong player engagement. Games linked to local festivals and sporting events (for example El Clásico, national holidays) help increase player retention and also expand the group of loyal users.

The iGaming industry and online casinos, like most digital businesses, increasingly use the possibilities offered by AI. Online casino operators in Spain most often use AI to personalize promotions and bonuses, detect risky gambling behaviors, segment players according to risk and lifetime value (LTV). AI is also present behind the scenes of online casinos. Operators optimize the process of creating blog content with news, monitor the technical status of the platform itself, and the published slot games.

Although it is still a niche, more and more casinos in Spain see the need for well-conducted integrations using blockchain and allowing cryptocurrency payments. It should be noted that in 2025 local regulators are more strictly controlling AML requirements.

One thing is sure: smooth registration and KYC verification on mobile devices and the possibility to pay in several ways (crypto, credit cards, Bizum) are the basis for gaining and keeping players in the Spanish market.

Spain has maintained stable and friendly regulations for years, but in 2025 some tightening appeared. Since this year, operators are required to verify customers more carefully for large transactions, monitor risky behaviors, and provide tools for responsible gaming (limits, self-exclusion mechanisms, access to help and support). The local regulator puts increasing pressure on operator responsibility and player protection, especially younger and mobile players.

Development prospects of iGaming in Spain

The year 2025 shows that Spain is growing stronger in iGaming. There is still dynamic growth in the popularity of live dealer games and increasing interest in modern crash games, which attract more and more players because of fast and exciting gameplay. Artificial intelligence is used more widely to personalize player experiences and to ensure their safety. In this context, Spanish regulations have become stricter, promoting responsible gaming and user protection. Operators who focus on excellent mobile UX, adapting offers to local culture, fast payments, and advanced personalization have the best chances for success in this competitive market.
